Dear Parents / Guardians

There is a strong possibility that our elementary teachers have chosen Tuesday, December 18th to stage a one day walkout strike action. In this case schools will be closed to elementary students on that day and their transportation will be cancelled. When official confirmation of this date is communicated by the union (possibly not until Saturday, December 15th) we suggest you monitor local media for updates. The Board will post the information on our website publicboard.ca as well as the websites of each
elementary school. You should also receive a phone call through an automated service which will confirm the date of this one day walkout and we will communicate through our Twitter account: @gecdsbpro.

On the day of the strike, schools will be closed to students. Regular classes and
transportation will resume the following day (expected to be Wednesday, December 19th). Transportation will be cancelled for our elementary students but you should note that some buses will still be on the roads servicing our high schools as well as other school boards within the Windsor-Essex region, which are not affected by this strike action.

All day cares, Ontario Early Years Centres, and Parenting and Family Literacy Centres in our elementary schools as well as before and after school programs offered by third-party providers will continue to operate, as usual. There may be information pickets at schools which host these programs. Entry may be delayed briefly but the union has given assurance that entry will not be blocked to these programs.

I regret that there has yet to be a resolution to the current collective bargaining dispute between the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario and the provincial government. It remains our intention to provide every student in the Greater Essex County District School Board with the excellent education they need and deserve in a safe and nurturing environment.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Principal of your child’s school.
Sincerely,

Warren Kennedy
Director of Education

News from Director Kennedy

December 6, 2012
Dear Parents / Guardians,

Since the beginning of this school year there has been a dispute between our
employees and the Government of Ontario over Bill 115, the Putting
Students First Act. As of December 10th, our elementary school teachers will
be in a legal position to increase the type and range of their job actions. We
have been informed that this may include one day, or possibly two days of a
full strike, where teachers in all of our elementary schools will completely
withdraw their services. If this happens we will close the elementary schools
to students on days when teachers withdraw services. Elementary schools
will reopen the following day.

The union representing elementary teachers has stated publicly that they will
provide parents / guardians notice before withdrawal of services takes place.
As soon as we have been notified we will make a concerted effort to notify
you through the media, our Board’s website – www.publicboard.ca,
automated telephone messaging, a newsletter and / or our Twitter account,
@gecdsbpro.

We recognize the difficulty that this strike action will present to parents /
guardians and students. It remains our intention to continue to provide every
student in the Greater Essex County District School Board with the excellent
education they need and deserve.

Sincerely,
Warren Kennedy
Director of Education
