Stand Up Challenge Cup: Friday, May 31st

Dear Parents and Guardians:

On Friday, May 31st, we will be having our Stand-Up Challenge Cup which will be an all day event. We are going to celebrate “Togetherness and Make a Stand Against Bullying” during fun, inclusive activities. We will be having water games, so please make sure that your child is prepared to get wet, dressed appropriately and has their own water bottle for refreshments. It is going to be a hot day, so please send sunscreen for your child to use.

Our Grade 8s will be the game captains for this fun event and our Grade 7s will be the team captains. There will be lots of adult supervision and the games will be very safe and fun.

On Friday, during our second nutrition break, pizza will be sold instead of on Thursday. Other items will be sold but our regular snacks will be served.

Please be ready for our fun day!

From Diala Makkawi, Bailey Zilliges
& Your Challenge Cup Committee

This Year’s EQAO Assessment Begins!

Let’s Show What We Know at Eastwood!

This week and next week our children will be taking part in the provincial Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, Primary (Grades JK-3) and Junior Division (Grades 4–6). This assessment is administered to all Grade 3 and 6 students in Ontario’s publicly funded school system by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), an independent agency of the Government of Ontario.

This assessment consists of two booklets assessing language and a third booklet assessing mathematics. Each booklet is made up of two sections, for a total of six sections. Each section will take about one hour to complete. The administration of the six sections will be spread out across the two-week window. At Eastwood we will be completing the assessment on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the 2 weeks.

EQAO assessment questions are directly based on the expectations set out in The Ontario Curriculum, which is what teachers teach in the classroom every day. Therefore, your child does not need to prepare in any special way. Students will write the test in their regular classrooms with their regular teachers and are simply encouraged to do their best and show what they know. We do ask that children continue to talk to their parents about learning, get lots of sleep and have healthy breakfasts to start the day!

In September, EQAO will send our school a report on your child’s achievement on the assessment, and we will send it home at that time. Your child’s results are private and will give you an indication of his or her achievement in relation to Ontario’s high provincial standard. The standard, or Level 3, represents the range from B– to B+. Meeting the standard means your child has a solid grasp of the required knowledge and skills, which is a good indication that he or she will be ready for Grade 7. The results of the assessment do not affect your child’s grades or report card in any way. They do, however, give you information about your child’s progress to add to the overall picture.

You can use the information that EQAO assessment results provide about your child’s strengths and areas needing improvement to celebrate his or her progress. It can help you in discussions with teachers. We can use it as a school community, along with other information, to guide our school improvement initiatives for reading, writing and mathematics. This benefits not only your child but all the students in our school. The results are also used by our school board and the Ministry of Education to direct attention and resources where they are needed.

For more information about EQAO and to view a sample of its assessments, you are encouraged to visit www.eqao.com

Thanks for all your support and help. Together we are making a difference in the lives our children and community!

Track Meet Friday, May 17th

We are anticipating a great day of weather for Track and Field!

1) Meet will begin at 8:45 a.m. after announcements and "O Canada." Students will go directly to their events. Students will have an area where they can put their backpacks, snacks, water etc.
2) Expectations outside while waiting for events: play basketball, soccer, knit, read, play cards, watching track and field events etc. Appropriate behaviour at Eastwood is an expectation.
3) BATHROOMS- The only door to be open is the Grade 3/4 Door, students will use this door to access washrooms.
4)“Quiet Room” passes and “Bathroom” passes will be given if we feel students need to be removed from outside, the Quiet room is in the Learning Commons room. When Mr. Dubeau or Mr. Cowper feels the student is ready to go back, they will send them with your Quiet room pass.
5) If students have a field event and a running event at the same time: Students must report to the field event teacher first to let them know they have a running event and will return as soon as they are done running. They still get to do their jumps, sometimes we have to wait.
6) Garbage and recycling: Containers will be outside near the intermediate doors.
7) LUNCH: Students and teachers will come in from 12:30 -1:10 p.m. Students in grade 3- 8 will stay in during this time to eat their lunches. We will treat this as an indoor recess to give the students a break from the sun. The primary student’s lunch hour will stay the same.
8) The games will begin again at 1:10 p.m. after attendance has been taken. Dismiss your students when you are ready.
